What forms of Medical Marijuana are allowed in Louisiana?

*You must be a current patient with a recommendation in order to place an online order. **Orders without a valid recommendation will not be accepted.

Available today are cannabis tinctures, which is the concentrated extract applied under the tongue via dropper, a distillate syringe (RSO) for oral administration and a topical cream that can be applied to the skin. Also available are gelatin-based chewables, an edible form of cannabis medication, and metered-dose inhalers, delivering a certain amount of medicine through your mouth and into your lungs.

As of January 1, 2022, flower is available as a form of medical cannabis in the state of Louisiana.

What is flower?
Flower refers to the trichome-covered part of a female cannabis plant. Otherwise known as bud, cannabis flower is a versatile medication and the most popular form of cannabis. While smoking in a pipe or joint is the most common way to medicate, vaporizing in a vaporizer, and incorporating into edibles are also viable treatment options.

As the medical marijuana program grows in Louisiana, we expect more dosage forms to become approved and/or available.

Tinctures are administered either: (click here)

Orally

  • You place the instructed dosage into your mouth and swallow. You should start to feel the effects coming on between 30 to 90 minutes, with a peak maximum effect reached after two to three hours, and last for about 4 to 12 hours, depending on the dose.

Sublingually

  • You place the instructed dosage under your tongue and hold for 30 seconds and then swallow. This helps get the medicine into your bloodstream quicker and is a preferred method that will allow you to feel the effects coming on faster and stronger.

What are Topical Creams?
Topicals can include cannabis-infused lotions, balms, and oils that are absorbed through the skin for localized relief of pain, soreness, and inflammation. Topicals are often used by patients who want the therapeutic benefits of marijuana without the cerebral euphoria associated with other delivery methods as they are non-intoxicating.

What is a Distillate Syringe?
It is a highly concentrated oil that can be used sublingually underneath the tongue or orally indigested.

What is a Gelatin-Based Chewable?
This is an edible form of medicine that contains cannabis. A popular method of delivery for medicinal marijuana, people should exercise caution when using edibles, especially for the first time. Patients should always adhere to the recommended dosage.

What is a Metered-Dose Inhaler?
This is a small, hand-held device filled with medicine. It helps deliver a certain amount of medicine through your mouth and into your lungs.

CBD Products

Cannabis is a plant that contains over 400 different chemical compounds. The two most commonly known naturally occurring compounds are THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol).

There are two types of cannabis plants. One type of cannabis plant is marijuana, which contains varying levels of THC, the compound that produces the “high.” Another type of cannabis plant is hemp, which has extremely low concentrations of THC (no more than 0.30%).

CBD is naturally contained in and can be extracted from either marijuana or hemp. Regardless of whether CBD is extracted from marijuana or hemp, CBD will not make you “high.”
